Things to Work on At Home
Our "Toolbox" Reading Strategies that also go along with the Beanie Babies:
Eagle Eye "Magnifying glass"-Look at the pictures
Lips the Fish "Pencil"-Use your lips to sound out the letters in the word
Stretchy Snake "Rubber band"-Stretch the sounds out in the work making sure to put them together to help figure out the word ( "C" -"a"- "t")
Chunky Monkey "Pliers"- Look for a smaller word inside of the bigger word. Look for a familiar chunk. (ring, hamburger, sand, flatter)
Skippy the Frog- Skip the word that you don't know and read the rest of the sentence, then hop back and reread the sentence.
Tryin' Lion- Try to read the sentence again and think about what makes sense. Ask yourself "What word would make sense here?"
Peekin' Poodle- Check the pictures and Check the words. Try all of the strategies together to see if you can figure out the word.
Making Connections to Texts!
We have used our schema and our "life experiences" to make text to self connections to the stories we are reading. The children can make connections to the character's experiences, or a feeling that the character feels. We are really focusing on making "meaningful connections" and not "coincidences". Meaningful connections help us understand the story better. They connect to the main idea or the theme of the book, not justa similiar experience that happened in the story.
